A traditional neuter removes the testicles, eliminating the primary source of testosterone. A vasectomy, on the other hand, prevents sperm from reaching the semen while leaving the testicles and natural hormone production intact.

When the testicles are removed, the dog becomes sterile and testosterone levels dramatically decrease.
Benefits of Traditional Neutering
1. Prevents unwanted litters
This is the primary purpose of neutering. A neutered male cannot impregnate a female.
2. Eliminates the risk of testicular cancer
Because the testicles are removed, testicular cancer is no longer possible.
3. Reduces some hormone-driven behaviors
Lower testosterone levels may decrease behaviors such as:
Roaming in search of females
Urine marking
Some forms of hormone-driven aggression
Mounting behaviors
However, neutering does not automatically “fix” all behavioral concerns. Many behaviors are learned habits, anxiety-related, or influenced by environment and training.

2. Avoids removal of healthy organs

Possible considerations include:
Increased tendency toward weight gain
Possible urinary changes in some females

Ovary-Sparing Spay (OSS): Preserving Female Hormones
An ovary-sparing spay removes the uterus while leaving the ovaries intact.
The female:
✅ Cannot become pregnant

✅ Avoids uterine disease
However:
She may still experience heat cycles
She may attract males
She may require management during cycles
Because the ovaries remain, ovarian diseases remain possible.
So Which Choice Is Best?
There is no universal answer.

For some dogs, traditional neutering or spaying is absolutely the best choice. For others, hormone-preserving options may be worth discussing.

Why the Age of Spay or Neuter Matters
One of the most important parts of the spay and neuter conversation is not just if a dog is altered, but when.
A puppy’s body is not simply a smaller version of an adult dog. During growth, reproductive hormones influence the development of bones, joints, muscles, metabolism, and behavior. Removing those hormones before a dog has reached physical maturity may have different effects than altering a fully mature dog.

Females: Why Many Owners Consider Waiting Until After the First Heat

Males: Why Many Owners Consider Waiting Until Physical Maturity
Male dogs do not have the same reproductive risks as females, but testosterone plays a role in development.
Allowing a male dog time to mature before neutering may support:

Adult body composition
For many small breeds, waiting until at least 9–12 months of age allows more time for physical maturity before removing testosterone.
